Spencer Academies Trust hosts Year 12 Medicine Preparation Workshop

Students from across three Spencer Academies Trust secondary schools attended a workshop organised by Derby Moor Spencer Academy, as part of a series of events aimed at supporting Spencer students to be as competitive as possible in their applications to medical school.

In partnership with the University of Nottingham, the afternoon was an opportunity to hear directly from a lecturer as well as a current medical student from the university. Students were able to ask questions and learn more about the application process and how to complete a successful application.

This is part of a series of workshop events across the Trust to enable students to better prepare for their application into studying Medicine at university. In Year 13, students will also take part in a mock interview day which was held for the first time last year and was a huge success for students, producing record numbers of successful applications; 15 of which were made an offer.

Executive Director of Post 16, Susan Sharp said – “It was great to see aspiring Medics from 3 Trust schools attend the event. Thank you to the University of Nottingham for hosting and delivering such an inspiring session - the students really got a lot from it and feel more prepared. We are also running a session for staff with the support of the Medical School Council later this week. This year we have a third more students who gained places, and all of this extra support should mean even more successful applicants across the Trust with lots of SAT doctors in the future!”

Dr Mandy Hampshire, a lecturer at the University of Nottingham, explained the importance of gaining work experience and keeping on top of the latest medical developments and NHS issues through reading, listening to podcasts and networking with other doctors and students.

Hamza, a second-year medical student, was also full of great tips for the students and talked them through his typical week which usually involves lectures, seminars, dissection, hospital placements and time with his own patients at a local GP surgery.

Ayva Fearn, a Year 12 student from Heanor Gate Spencer Academy said – “It was really helpful to hear from both a student and lecturer from the Nottingham Medical School as they gave us perspectives from both sides. I'm walking away with a key action plan of what I need to do and how to start preparing. The medical student was very enthusiastic and gave some fantastic advice on how to make my personal statement stand out.”

We wish our sixth form students every success with their applications and studies!
