Heanor Gate student wins Silver at World Karate Championships
Oliver Hughes competed among 5,000 athletes from 31 countries and came second in in his age group’s kumite individual event.
Oliver Hughes, a student at Heanor Gate Spencer Academy, recently competed at the World Karate Championships in Dundee, Scotland, where he won silver in the kumite individual event.
Oliver started training at the South Derbyshire Karate Academy in 2017 and has most recently attained his brown and white belt. He began training with the Amateur Martial Arts Association in 2020, where he was selected to represent England at the World Union of Karate-Do Federations (WUKF) World Karate Championships. Over 5,000 athletes from 31 countries attended the competition in Dundee, Scotland earlier in July.
Oliver participated in two events: a kumite team event with two of his squad teammates and an individual kumite event. The team competed very well, but did not place; Oliver won silver in his individual event.
Natasha Hughes, Oliver’s mother, said, “We as a family are very proud of Oliver’s achievements and all the training that he has put in to get to the World Championships. I also have to thank his Senseis for all their support and time they have given to Oliver.”
